A brief history of the western signs of the Zodiac

The signs of the Zodiac are a great way of personalising your gift giving but which sign represents their date of birth? Here is a brief history followed by the dates, colours and meanings associated with each sign.  It's worth mentioning that while the Western Zodiac is widely known and used in Western astrology, other cultures have their own astrological systems with different constellations and interpretations.

The concept of the Zodiac can be traced back to ancient civilizations, particularly to the Babylonians in Mesopotamia around 2,500 years ago. They divided the sky into twelve equal segments, each representing a particular constellation. These divisions were used as a way to track the movement of celestial bodies and predict seasons and events.

The Greeks later adopted the Babylonian Zodiac and assigned names and symbols to each of the twelve constellations. The word "Zodiac" comes from the Greek word "zōidiakos", which means "circle of animals". The constellations along the Zodiac were associated with various myths and stories, mostly involving gods and heroes.

The twelve signs of the Zodiac are based on the Earth's yearly orbit around the Sun, creating the illusion of the Sun moving through each constellation. The dates associated with each sign correspond to the Sun's position at a particular time of the year.

Over time, astrology became more popular, and people began associating certain traits, personalities, and characteristics with each Zodiac sign. These traits were believed to be influenced by the positions of the celestial bodies at the time of a person's birth.

It's important to note that astrology and astronomy were closely intertwined in ancient times. However, as scientific knowledge advanced, astronomy separated itself from astrology, focusing on the study of celestial objects and their movements while distancing itself from linking them to human personality traits.

Nevertheless, the Zodiac and its association with astrological beliefs remain prevalent in many cultures today. People often consult horoscopes and astrologers for guidance and insight into their lives based on their Zodiac sign.
